Crater: A Constellation Depicting a Cup - Crater is a small constellation in the southern sky that represents a cup used by the god Apollo in Greek mythology. It is one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy in the second century.
Stars and Star Systems in Crater - Crater has no star brighter than third magnitude. Its brightest stars are Delta and Alpha Crateris, both orange giants. Beta Crateris is a binary system of a white giant and a white dwarf. Gamma Crateris is a double star of a white main sequence star and an orange dwarf. Several stars in Crater have planets, such as HD 98800, a quadruple system with a protoplanetary disk, and HD 96167, a subgiant with a Jupiter-like planet.
Deep Sky Objects and Other Features in Crater - Crater contains some notable galaxies, such as Crater 2, a dwarf satellite of the Milky Way, NGC 3887, a spiral galaxy seen edge-on, and NGC 3981, a barred spiral galaxy in the Crater Cloud. Crater also hosts a quasar, RX J1131, with a black hole whose spin has been measured, and two gamma-ray bursts, GRB 011211 and GRB 030323. The Eta Craterids are a faint meteor shower that occurs in January.
